Panama produces 3,841,375 tons  of agricultural products approximately, with the participation of 35,440 producers. 

  • Industrial crops contribute 63%

Panama Agriculture Map

In Panama, rice, corn and coffee are the most important crops. The largest concentration of agricultural land is on the Pacific slope, east of the Panama Canal.

Vision: An agricultural sector at the service of the producer and the population, which seeks competitiveness and the improvement of the rural environment in a sustainable and equitable way, through the coordination of all the sectors involved, allowing producers and the rest of the population to move away from the poverty line.

How dependent is the rural population of agriculture?

The more dependent the rural population is on economic income from agriculture, the more sensitive it will be to the effects of climate change on crops.

Institute of Agricultural Research of Panama

The Institute of Agricultural Research of Panama (IDIAP) is the government institution whose main function is to research to generate, adapt, validate and disseminate agricultural knowledge and technologies, framed within the policies, strategies and guidelines of the agricultural sector.

Panamanian Aquatic Resources Authority

Manage, encourage, promote, develop, project and apply the policies, strategies, legal and regulatory standards, plans and programs that are directly related to the activities of fishing, aquaculture, marine management -coastal and related activities, based on the guiding principles that ensure the production, conservation, control, administration, promotion, research and responsible and sustainable use of Aquatic resources, taking into account biological aspects, Technological, economic, food security, social, cultural, environmental and commercial aspects.

Some Food Production Facts of Panama

Industrial Crops

Of the total production obtained, the group of industrial crops contributed 63% to production and of this percentage:

  • Sugarcane contributes 89% to production within this classification.

Fruits

Of the total production obtained, the group of fruits contributed 22% to production and of this percentage:

  • Orange 43% 
  •  Banana 33%

Basic Grains

Of the total production obtained, the group of basic grains contributed 12% to production and of this percentage:

  • mechanized rice constitutes 77%; 
  • mechanized corn 21% 
  • and the others (beans, pigeon peas others) 1.24% of said production.

Vegetables and Greens

Of the total production obtained, the group of Vegetables and Greens contributed 4% to production and of this percentage: 


  • potato crop contributes 53%, 
  • onion 33% and 
  • tomato industry 12%.

Total Area of Crops

The graph indicates the percentage distribution of 209,322 hectares harvested that involves 60 items from six groups of crops.

  • The group of basic grains that includes rice, corn, beans, beans and pigeon peas, represents 50% of the total surface.
  •  The group of industrial crops such as coffee, sugarcane, cocoa and oil palm represents 30% of total surface
  • and fruit crops 17% of total surface

Percentage of Production by Province and Product in Panama

Distribution % of RICE production

Mechanized rice cultivation is concentrated in the provinces of Chiriqui, which contributes the highest percentage to the country, followed by Panamá Este, Coclé, Veraguas and Los Santos as shown on the map. The average growth rate in the last five years in production was 2.5%.

Distribution % of CORN production

Corn production is concentrated mainly in the provinces of Los Santos, Herrera and Chiriquí

Distribution % of BEAN production

The distribution of production is shown on the map where the greatest contributions are in the provinces of Chiriquí, Veraguas and Herrera.

Distribution % of ONION production

The greatest contribution occurs in the province of Chiriquí, followed by Coclé, to a lesser extent in Herrera and Los Santos.

Most of production is in Los Santos
